Question Taken at Daily Briefing of Dec. 20, 2004

Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe Journalist Yuri Bagrov (Taken Question)

Question: What is the U.S. reaction to Radio Liberty's journalist in
Moscow having his passport seized to prevent further travel in the
region?

Answer: We view with concern reports of the proceedings against Radio
Free Europe/Radio Liberty correspondent Yuri Bagrov. We are working to
ascertain the facts in this case, and continue to monitor issues of
media freedom in Russia. We raise with Russia concerns about its
commitment to international standards of human rights, press freedom,
and rule of law as part of our ongoing dialogue with senior officials.
The U.S. will continue to support democracy in Russia and elsewhere as a
fundamental part of United States foreign policy. [End]
